WORKSHOP and CONCERT: BRAZILIAN SONGWRITING AND CREATIVE SINGING

WORKSHOP and CONCERT: BRAZILIAN SONGWRITING AND CREATIVE SINGING:

This workshop introduces
compositional gestures which feature the Brazilian contemporary popular song
regarding music and lyrics. The original poetic intentions are highlighted and interpreted
for non-Portuguese speaker audiences, illustrating songwriting choices and
models. Creative approaches are experienced through collaborative improvisation,
representing social and historical aspects of Brazilian musical cultures from
different regions. Samba, bossa nova, afoxé, baião, maracatu besides pop-rock
influences, fusions and appropriations of South-American styles such as milonga,
chamamé and candombe are presented. Reflections and tips about Brazilian singing
will be offered for non-Native Portuguese speakers starting from easy examples
to more sophisticated songs in a musical clinic. Both participants and
observers can take part of the activity, which is not only directed for
musicians, but also for writers, actors, performers and educators.
